Eastern Cape Education Department (ECDoE) honours Nelson Mandela Day celebrations

Eastern Cape Education Department (ECDoE) set on making full use of the Mandela birthday celebration by volunteering services throughout the July month!

South Africa along with the international community witnessed the official launch of Nelson Mandela International Day on 28 March 2011. With “Change” as the 2011 theme for the July month, citizens all over the globe will be volunteering 67 minutes of their time towards various activities in an aim to make a positive change in various corners of their societies.

Following suit, ECDoE has also fully endorsed that all departmental officials stand behind Mandela’s thematic birth month activities.

Department’s Special Programmes Unit Actyin Head, Selwyn Bruiners explains the Mandela Day celebrations as a time for individuals to engage in positive initiatives in communities.

“Mandela Day on 18 July is more than a celebration of Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy, it is a global movement to take his life’s work into a new century and change our world for the better,” he said.

In a statement released yesterday to honour the legacy and devotion of Nelson Mandela towards global positive change, Head of Eastern Cape Education Department, Advocate Modidima Mannya affirmed the departments stand as solid behind the celebrations.

“Tata Mandela placed a huge emphasis on the provision of quality education for all and the Department of Education is committed to realise this goal,” he said.

Amongst the various activities outlined, Mannya said a plan was at hand for the entire Department in which “officials, teachers and learners will donate 67 minutes and beyond of their time towards acts of goodwill.”

Included in the activities are events where senior management of the department led by Education MEC Mandla Makupula will volunteer various basic cleaning services to two local schools in the local Zwelitsha Head Office precinct, Thembalabantu and Xolani High Schools on 29 July 2011 and at a handing over of computers to one Sobantu Senior Secondary School in Peddie at a date which is yet to be announced.

The monthly departmental activities including districts activities can be found on departmental website at http://www.ecdoe.gov.za.
