Eastern Cape Department of Transport Customer Care Centre to operate 24 hours a day as from Friday 23 December until 2 January 2012

As part of the effort to intensify the festive season Arrive Alive Campaign, the Eastern Cape Department of Transport Customer Care Centre will operate 24 hours a day as from Friday 23 December until 2 January 2012.

Members of the public are urged to make use of the call centre toll free number: 0800 644 644 to report all incidents on the roads, including: 

Road Accidents

  • Traffic Obstruction e.g. rocks, trees fallen on the road, oil spillage
  • Stray animals
  • Reckless driving (please provide vehicle make, direction it’s driving to and the registration number), and
  • All other matters you would like to be assisted with

“We appreciate the response from the members of public since the start of this festive season as we have already received 2 216 calls,” says Transport MEC Thandiswa Marawu.

Since January to date, the centre has received 28 308 telephonic enquiries with total from 1 December to date standing at 2 216.

Since the start of the festive season, 216 road accidents have been reported to the call centre, which included:

  • 155 serious accidents
  • 129 slight injuries
  • 48 fatalities

With regard to traffic law enforcement and intensification of Operation Asihleki, our law enforcement agencies have managed to stop and screen 67 746 vehicles as from 1 to 22 December 2011.

Notices issued – 11 567.

Discontinued/impounded 146 vehicles, (36 Busses, 56 Mini Busses & 54 other vehicles (Ldv’s, m/vehicles), 573 arrests for various offences:Drunken driving – 235, Warrants – 378, Other – 163.
