The Eastern Cape Department of Health has awarded bursaries to 213 students to the tune of R17 million. The students are studying in tertiary institutions in South Africa. Rural students comprise 54% of the recipients whilst the remaining 46 originate from the urban areas.

The bursaries awarded cover tuition, residence fees, books, meals, examination fees and registration.
The MEC for Health Mr Sicelo Gqobana committed the department to ensuring that it will do all it can to make the studies of the students very conducive by paying timeously. He also encouraged the students to finish in record time because they are badly needed by our communities. He also encouraged them to be responsible in their behaviour and not to be promiscuous and experimental.
The students are studying in the following universities, Rhodes University, Walter Sisulu University, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, University of Fort Hare, University of the Western Cape, University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch University, University of Witwatersrand, University of Pretoria, Medical University of South Africa and University of the Orange Free State.
