Eastern Cape Department of Education re-opens Lovedale Further Education Training (FET) College

The Eastern Cape Department of Education calls on all students and staff members of the Lovedale Further Education Training college to attend schooling tomorrow morning as the impasse in this college has been sorted out.

This follows a meeting between the department, National Education Health and Allied Workers’ Union (NEHAWU), South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU), College SRC, South African Students Congress (SASCO), parents, the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL), College Council and the National Higher Education and Training department in the college today meant to resolve issues raised by the college students. Furthermore, all parties involved in sorting out the impasse approved that teaching and learning must resume as early as tomorrow to ensure that learning is not disturbed while outstanding issues raised by the concerned parties are finalised.

The high delegation stakeholder’s forum settled on a four point resolution that is meant to chart a way forward in the dispute resolution surrounding the college and these include:

  • that the college re-opens as early as Thursday the 23rd of August 2012;
  • That all students return to class and teaching and learning resumes as normal;
  • a stakeholder meeting is scheduled to take place on Thursday the 23rd of August to deal with the issues raised by the students and seek ways to resolve them; and that
  • continuous engagement with all education stakeholders within the next 14 working days

Additionally, all parties also decided that should similar disruptions occur; the College management in consultation with the stakeholders will have to take the necessary measures to protect the college property and personnel at all cost.  Since not all issues raised were resolved but priority was given to major issues, all stakeholders agreed that Friday’s meeting will be held at the College Head Office campus in King Williams town from 9h30 in the morning, and that in the meantime teaching and learning must be allowed to continue without any disruptions.
