Eastern Cape Department of Education introduces online areas of learning

The Eastern Cape Department of Education has introduced a new way of learning mathematics through an exciting electronic medium which has seen 423 schools utilising the medium and a science, while 399 schools have been provided with music and technical subject software, provincially.

According to Henry Kavuma, the chief education specialist in the e-learning section, the department has provided mathematics software and information and communication technology (ICT) infrastructure to these schools.

“This interactive software can be used to complement teaching of mathematics in the classroom through the use of a laptop and data projector” explained Kavuma.

He further stated that schools with computer laboratories have been provided with drill and practice mathematics software so that learners can practice problem solving with instant assessment (e-assessment).

Music learners who are required by the curriculum to compose, arrange, improvise and record their own music using technology will according to Kavuma now use the music software to accomplish their learning outcome. Despite that, the same software can also be used for dance studies and dramatic arts.

The science software will enable teachers to electronically simulate practical experiments in physical and life sciences in the classroom and is believed to address the shortage of practical resources in schools.

“Also 40 technical schools are now able to use computer aided design software for technical subjects, which is critical for digital age where most designs are computer generated” said Kavuma.

He added that the department is gradually addressing the technological needs of schools despite numerous competing priorities.

All of this according to Kavuma brings excitement at the prospect of teaching critical subject like mathematics through a mode of teaching that contemporary digital-age learners can relate to.

“We urge teachers to make use of this software so that this investment can translate into improved learner attainment in the Eastern Cape,” concluded Kavuma.
