Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) supports 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup

The launch of my 2010 schools adventure an initiative to lure South Africa citizens has gained momentum as thus schools across the racial dived have adopted countries and also parents are participating country wide supporting the 2010 FIFA World Cup to be hosted in South Africa in less than hundred days.

My 2010 school adventure campaign which was established by the FIFA World Cup Organising Committee in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Department of Education and Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture has three key pillars, namely the education, development (sport skills and coaching) and participation in general and nationwide schools football tournaments.

The power behind this natured event is to unleash the talents within learners and teachers, also to educate learners about the 2010 Soccer World Cup, with the flip-side of motivating citizens especially parents to get involved in the game.

“All partaking Eastern Cape school teams are currently playing in the circuits’ school tournaments and the four finalists from the knockout will take part in the provincial schools confederations cup which will be held in East London on 17 April, 2010,” said Daniel Sotyato, Deputy Chief Education Specialist (DCES) in school enrichment programme and Provincial Coordinator of 2010 schools FIFA World Cup.

These finalists are expected to adopt countries like Portugal, Ivory Coast, United Sates of America (USA) and Switzerland; therefore the Eastern Cape community is urged to get involved in teaching the youth the national anthems and norms of the various countries. Participating schools will also be sponsored with vuvuzelas, t-shirts and transport by the education department. “That strategy is devised to instil the love for sport to learners at their tender stage and to motivate them to do away with idleness,” added Sotyato.

He emphasised that since this programme also seeks to educate learners about different countries provinces adopted a country or four which they represent and that will enhance learners to have in-depth knowledge about the country’s culture, identity, norms etc.

“Besides being in the field participating in sport, the Eastern Cape Department of Education (ECDoE) has opened a platform for learners to compete in art, poetry, essay writing and other spheres of interest which forms part of My 2010 school’s adventure,” concluded Sotyato.
