In an effort to demonstrate government's commitment to rural development, provincial government injected R30 million to Africa's Best 350 Ltd and Mayibuye Bus Corporation today in order to improve access to safe, reliable and affordable public transport by the rural communities.
This was announced during the presentation of the Introduction of Adjustments Appropriations Bill 2010 by the MEC for Finance, Phumulo Masualle.
The Eastern Cape Department of Transport has allocated R23 million to Africa's Best 350 Ltd to continue operations in the rural areas of the former Transkei region.
Mayibuye Transport Corporation will receive R7 million with R4.3 million for operations and R2.7 million for ticket machines in order to improve revenue generation.
"This is a clear demonstration of the ANC-led government's commitment to rural development and to ensure that our rural communities have access to a safe, reliable, efficient and affordable public transport system,” said Transport MEC Thandiswa Marawu.
She further committed her department to ensure that the Buffalo City Municipality was assisted in its integrated transport planning process.
"Currently, the project is entirely owned by the municipality and they received money directly from the national Department of Transport. Perhaps, we need to monitor the project closely in order to close the prevailing gaps," she added.
