About 50 destitute rural families will for the first time in their lives spend Christmas under a proper roof, thanks to the R2,7 million housing development project for vulnerable groups launched by the North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono in Kokomeng village outside Taung in the North West Province on Tuesday.
The project launched for the benefit of victims of any form of abuse, the elderly, the disabled and child headed households as an extension of the 16 days of activism for no violence against women and children. This was a fulfilment of a promise MEC Mohono had made to the community during her visit earlier in April prior the local government elections.
The MEC pleaded with the community to support the contractor on site as the project is expected to create employment for unemployed villagers.
"Any theft of material during construction will only serve to delay completion and delivery of the project,” said Mohono.
Realising that there was emergency housing backlog from 2006, MEC Mohono committed another 50 housing units to address the challenge in the area as part of her special project.
MEC Mohono said that her department was committed to restoring people’s dignity through housing delivery.
In appreciating the community’s patience for waiting for construction of the houses, MEC Mohono donated food parcels to about 100 destitute families within the village, which includes the beneficiaries of the houses to be constructed.
Receiving food parcels from the MEC, sixty three-year-old Lesize April Gotyane who is one of the 50 housing beneficiaries expressed appreciation to what government is doing to change the lives of impoverished rural communities like Kokomeng.
Gotyane who suffered a stroke attack 7 years ago, lives with his five children in a dilapidated mud house.
The Provincial Human Settlement department worked jointly with the department of Social Development, Women, Children and People with Disabilities and the Greater Taung Local Municipality to identify beneficiaries through its indigent register.
