The opening of the newly renovated and colourful playroom has brought much joy to children admitted in the Paediatric Ward at Mahikeng Provincial Hospital. Fifty-one children most of whom are from impoverished communities around Mahikeng received new pyjamas and toys as early Christmas gifts from Premier Thandi Modise during the official opening held on Friday afternoon.
In an impulsive reaction Premier Modise broke protocol and jumped into the room to appreciate to the sight of the colourful playroom fitted with Plasma TV, tables and chairs before cutting the ribbon.
“The breath-taking sight from the last time i was in the ward was just overwhelming for me to resist,” the Premier later apologised.
“The intervention by Trustees of Thandi Ruth Modise Health Development Trust and contribution of the donors who supported our cause has made an immeasurable difference to improve the conditions towards a healthy environment that will promote speedy recovery and good health of the young ones admitted to the ward,” Modise remarked.
An Early Childhood Development educator, Basiame Mothusi from Coligny whose child is a patient in the ward commended the relevance of the learning material in the playroom for childhood development.
Sello Tshukudu from Lehurutshe and other parents expressed appreciation for the Premier’s compassion, warmth and care while Sophy Mira from Kopela was grateful that the Modise took up the issue of her child’s continuous coughing with the nursing staff during her walkabout.
In addition, the ward received Industrial washing machine and tumble dryer and new linen from the Trust established by Modise to improve conditions in the paediatric ward without relying on the budget of the Department of Health and or state funding.
Since the Premier adopted the ward after the 2011 Mandela Day, The Trust has repaired air conditioning system in the maternity ward, provided blankets, sheets, pillows and painted comic characters on the wall of the paediatric ward through funds mobilised during golf fund raising and gala events.
