Dust-off your vuvuzelas for “die bokke”

The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) wishes the Springboks well as they head off to New Zealand for the Rugby World Cup 2011 and is confident that they will make South Africa proud. All South Africans especially young people should get behind the current rugby champions in the same way that they supported Bafana Bafana during the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

The critical role that sport has played in South Africa’s history cannot be undermined. The image of former President Nelson Mandela wearing the number six captain’s jersey and hoisting the William Webb Ellis trophy with Francois Pienaar marked the end of an era filled with oppression and hate and ushered in an era of the rainbow nation.

Sport also plays a critical role in getting young people away from the streets and ensuring that they maintain a healthy lifestyle. The NYDA therefore supports the bottom-up approach to transforming South African rugby through the provision of the necessary facilities in previously disadvantaged schools and communities.

In conclusion, it is now time for all South Africans to dust-off their vuvuzelas, wear green and gold and sing the national anthem proudly as we support the “die bokke.”
