The Department of Trade and Industry (the dti) awarded certificates to five newly established Cooperatives in Andriesvale, Northern Cape province. The certificate award ceremony was part of the department’s programme of commemorating international Mandela day with the community of Andriesvale.
The Director responsible for Cooperative Development at the dti, Mr Samuel Akrong said that the awarding of certificates to Andriesvale cooperatives was a follow-up process to a Youth Economic Empowerment Programme that was hosted by Deputy Minister Thandi Tobias-Pokolo in April this year.
“It was at that event in April when the Deputy Minister challenged the youth to be economically active by taking advantage of services offered at the dti and establishing their very own businesses. This event is Andriesvale’s response to the Deputy Minister’s challenge,” said Akrong.
Akrong said that he hoped that the newly established cooperatives will work hard to ensure that their businesses succeed in order to participate in the economy of the country and to create jobs for the broader community of Andriesvale.
The cooperatives awarded certificates were: Rooi Duin FM Cooperative Ltd which will establish and run a community radio station, Askham Leerlooiry Cooperative Ltd which will operate as a leather tannery, Andriesvale Saamwerk Retail Cooperative Ltd, which will trade as a general dealer, Red Dune Events, Décor and Catering Planners Cooperative Ltd which will provide event management and catering services and Birox Multiply Services and Trading Cooperative Ltd which will be a recycling and cleaning cooperative.
According to Akrong, all these cooperatives will be assisted by the dti to access funds from the Co-operatives Incentive Scheme (CIS) and other services from government to support their businesses.
Samuel Akrong of the dti presents a registration certificate to Rooi Duin FM Cooperative Ltd from Andriesvale.
