The Department of Trade and Industry, (the dti) in partnership with the South African Women Entrepreneurs Network (SAWEN) hosted a wellness programme targeting business women in Lansdowne, Cape Town yesterday.

The programme was aimed at inculcating and promoting a healthy lifestyle amongst SAWEN members and other businesswomen, which is envisaged to have positive spin-offs on the day to day operations of their businesses.

The Chief Executive Officer of SAWEN, Ms Ruth Masokoane said the wellness programme was another platform for women to network in a different environment that is relaxed and at the same time encouraging them to be cautious of their health.

“Since we are celebrating Women’s Month in August, it is only fitting that we identify different platforms to try and reach women in different settings that can help them to incorporate health issues on their journey to building their wealth and growing their businesses,” said Masokoane.

Masokoane further said SAWEN was planning to build and put in place viable health programmes that can be easily accessed by their members in different provinces.

the dti’s Regional Manager in the Western Cape, Mr Lionel Achillies said one of the department’s focus areas was to broaden economic participation at all levels to the previous disadvantaged groups especially women and the youth.

“These initiatives enable the dti to inform and educate women about our products and services, especially those that are aimed at empowering women. It is also important to encourage women to have a balance and not neglect their health in the process of establishing their businesses,” said Achillies.

Activities for the day included a walkathon, aerobics and a dance competition.
