North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison Desbo Mohono has called upon motorists to reduce speeding following a road crash in which one person died and three others were seriously injured in a five vehicle pile-up. The accident occurred outside Hartbeespoort on the R512 Hartbeespoort-Broederstroom road in the North West province on Saturday night.
It is alleged that a Nissan Navara Double Cab with occupants hit a stationary Honda Civic sedan from behind at a stop-sign on the Hartbeeshoek turn-off at around 9:00pm. The impact of the collision forced the Honda Civic to swerve into the lane of oncoming traffic and collide with three other vehicles, a Land Rover, Daihatsu sedan and a Ford Ranger bakkie.
The driver of the Honda Civic aged 39 died at the scene of the accident while his 42 year old wife survived the accident with serious injuries.
The 24 year old driver of the Navara was also seriously injured while a 52 year old male passenger from the Landrover was also taken to hospital with slightly injuries. The occupants from the Daihatsu and Ford Ranger bakkie escaped without injuries.
Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide, reckless and or negligent driving.
MEC Mohono wishes to convey her condolences to the family of the driver who lost his life in the crash and also wish the injured road users a speedy recovery.
