Driver arrested for overloading 33 learners in a nine passenger vehicle

A driver transporting school children was arrested on Wednesday afternoon in Delareyville for loading 33 learners in a Toyota Quantum that is certified to carry nine passengers. The driver whose vehicle is allegedly contracted by government to transport learners further failed to produce a driver’s license while the car was also not roadworthy.

North West Traffic Authorities have since impounded and discontinued the said vehicle. The drive was arrested and is currently detained at the Delareyville police station and charged for overloading. He is expected to appear before the Delareyville Magistrate court on Friday.

According to traffic Authorities, the learners claimed to have complained to the driver on numerous occasions but all their attempts were in vain.
North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Nono Maloyi pleaded to motorists to adhere to road rules at all times. He further sends a strong warning to those road offenders, especially to drivers transporting school children to and from school on daily basis.

“Overloading is one of the contributory factors that cause high number of fatalities on our roads. We are going to continue dealing harshly with those offenders,” said Maloyi.
