The Department of Basic Education has developed a Draft National Policy on HIV and TB. Revising the 1999 National Policy on HIV and AIDS for Learners and Educators in Public Schools and Students and Educators in Further Education and Training Institutions, is one of the key activities in the DBE Integrated Strategy on HIV, STIs and TB, 2012-2016. The Strategy was approved for implementation by the Council of Education Ministers in November 2012.
The draft policy is intended to articulate the department’s policy position on HIV and, for the first time, on TB within the basic education sector. The draft policy will be refined and finalised through a consultative process with various directorates in the national and provincial education departments, other government departments, research and academic organisations, development partners and key stakeholders in the sector including learner representative organisations, teacher unions, school governing body formations, principal associations, and non-governmental organisations.
You are invited to review and provide comments and suggestions on the Department of Basic Education Draft National Policy on HIV and TB. The draft policy, as well as the Integrated Strategy on HIV, STIs and TB, 2012-2016, can be found on the department’s website: www.education.gov.za.
Comments can be sent to hivpolicy@dbe.gov.za by 30 September 2013.
