Seventy-seven motorists were arrested for unpaid traffic fines in Klerksdorp, Orkney, Wolmaranstadt and Ventersdorp by the North West Public Safety Traffic enforcement unit nicknamed JAWS over the past weekend.
One hundred and fifty seven motorists were arrested in the jurisdiction of Dr Kenneth Kaunda District Municipality over the past week and over R89 000 in outstanding traffic fines recouped.
The arrests bring to 1 195 warrants of arrests served on motorists since the unit embarked on a province wide special operation to arrest motorists for unpaid fines. The operation in its third week has thus far recouped close to R477 000 through warrants of arrests served on motorists.
A 49 year old truck driver who had nineteen warrants of arrests to the value of R11 120 was among motorists arrested since the operations started three weeks ago.
Meanwhile, MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa advises motorists with unpaid traffic fines to settle outstanding payments to avoid the inconvenience of being arrested as traffic law enforcement is tightened to minimise road accidents over the festive period.
