DoL uses technology to invigorate equity reporting

The Department of Labour is to revolutionise its forthcoming employment equity roadshows by giving employers live demonstrations of on-line reporting as well as critical areas of amendments.

Speaking on the sidelines after addressing the Portfolio Committee on labour's public hearings on the employment equity amendment bill in Cape Town on Tuesday, Ntsoaki Mamashela, director of employment equity, said the roadshows, which start in Knysna, in the Western Cape, on August 13, will provide employers with the sectoral employment equity status after 15 years of the law having come into force.

"We will also use the opportunity to thank employers for having fallen in love with the on-line reporting system considering that up to 96 percent reported on-line last year. This is a vast improvement from days gone by,'' she said.

Mamashela said other areas of focus during the roadshows include ensuring that employers comply with employment equity plans - provide proper analysis of the workforce - abide by policies, procedures and practices of the law and to ensure that they take the outcomes of their analysis to inform their equity plans - as well as establishing how fully and accurately their plans comply with the equity law and its expectations.

She said another motivation for on-line reporting was in line with the green campaign and environmental protection.

The roadshows will see teams of departmental employment equity officials visiting all provinces and rounding off their business in Johannesburg on 6 September.
