DoL lauds equity reports employer submissions

Close to 11 000 companies successfully submitted their employment equity reports in the Department of Labour’s Public Register in 2011, a meeting was told in Woodmead, Johannesburg, on Wednesday.

The event formed part of newly-started road shows to stakeholders from business and labour unions about the departmental drive to get employers, both large and small, to submit their reports before the October 1 reporting deadline for manual submission. Online reporting period for 2012 opens on September 1 and closes on January 15, 2013.

Addressing hundreds of people, Tshililo Siobo, from the department’s Employment Equity Directorate, said: ‘it was important to abide by the reporting requirements and deadlines as those who failed to do so will be excluded from the Public Register. The register is useful for Employment equity Act applications as anyone applying to do business with government has to prove their compliance with the law.

Siobo said he was pleased that in 2010, a total of 90% of equity reports were submitted online. The figure increased to 95% the following year.

According to the 2011 public register per province, Gauteng employers submitted the biggest chunk with just over 47%, followed by Western Cape with close to 18% and KwaZulu-Natal at almost 15%.

The lowest province was the Northern Cape with figures showing only 1.44% of employers submitted their reports.

Siobo used the occasion to dwell on the technical aspect of submitting reports online as this is the preferred means being promoted by the department.

He urged employers wanting assistance to use the department’s helpline 086 010 1018 or visit their nearest labour department offices.

The roadshow will proceed to Cape Town and East London on Tuesday, August 21.
