MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs China Dodovu has made an appeal to mining houses in the North West to throw their full weight behind supporting Municipalities through proper implementation of social and labour plans.
At a breakfast session recently held with captains of the mining and banking institutions, MEC Dodovu said such an action was critical in securing the reduction of the social and economic burdens that Municipalities are grappling with.
“Government has not anticipated that they would at this stage be faced with challenges and problems that are currently facing local government. Amongst others such challenges include lack of sound financial administration, lack of enough financial resources, under - development, high levels of inequalities and high unemployment rate. We need to change state of municipal finances so that investors could be attracted” he said.
“Bojanala Platinum District is rich with minerals such as platinum and locals must benefit by way of employment, skills empowerment or developments in their areas. The collaboration between government and business is important because for business to thrive a solid government must exist and that the success of government is that of businesses”, he said.
MEC Dodovu also appealed to the mining and banking institutions to assist in the deployment of people with adequate financial and technical skills to Municipalities. “This will go a long a way in turning around the situation and this will be an important milestone for Municipalities”, MEC Dodovu added.
Meanwhile, the mining giants made a call to the department to ensure stability in the traditional authorities especially those around the mines.
