Doctor dismissed for professional misconduct

The Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development has summarily dismissed a doctor from South Rand hospital for professional misconduct.

The decision was taken after it was reported to the department that the doctor, who was on standby on the night of 25 November, had refused to come out and help a patient. When he eventually came out, the doctor was allegedly aggressive to nurses and acted unprofessionally.

After reviewing the case the department decided to dismiss the doctor with immediate effect. The MEC for Health and Social Development Qedani Mahlangu has repeatedly warned health professionals that negative and insensitive attitude towards patients will not be tolerated.

Doctors are reminded that the department has a right to recover legal costs directly from them in cases of gross negligence.
