The Department of Communications Minister, Ms Dina Pule spent two days visiting the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) to engage with organised labour, the board, management and the workers.
She was there to listen to the concerns of all the stakeholders and to reassure them of her commitment to the stabilisation of the broadcaster. A stable SABC is better able to deliver on its public mandate, which is; to inform, educate and to entertain.
Ms Pule urged all the SABC stakeholders to work tirelessly to recover the integrity of the SABC brands.
“We have committed ourselves to support you in order for you to discharge your responsibilities to turn-around this Corporation towards financial sustainability,” she said.
Ms Pule was heartened by the progress she saw in the broadcaster’s efforts to turn its finances around.
“We value your contribution and expect all of you to observe corporate governance principles in the execution of your responsibilities. We are expecting good performance from all of you,” she urged the SABC stakeholders.
She reminded them of the leading role the SABC is expected to play in the digital broadcasting migration project of the country.
To help realise this project, Ms Pule has pledged her support to the board and management to move with speed by filling all the vacant posts at the SABC.
Ms Pule took the opportunity occasioned by her visit to the SABC to introduce the newly appointed Group Chief Executive Officer, Ms Lulama Mokhobo and the Deputy Chairperson of the board, Mr Thami ka Plaatjie to the stakeholders.
The Minister commits to having regular interactions with the State Owned Entities (SOEs) to ensure seamless and flow of information in order to avoid and curb any miscommunication and to be in the forefront of the developments and any challenges that may arise.
