Do the dead have rights: The promotion and protection of burial rights and the rights of access to sacred graves

The Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission) will be joining the nation and especially human rights institutions in celebrating the Human Rights Month in March 2012.

While it will celebrate and acknowledge progress that South Africa has made in attainment of human rights, the commission hopes to highlight some of the areas where most work needs to be done namely:

  • The areas of protection and promotion of Cultural, Spiritual and Religious rights of ordinary communities. In particular, the Commission wishes to highlight the continuing violations of ancestral graves,
  • The rights of the dead and
  • Associated violation of cultural, spiritual and religious rights of the poor and rural communities in South Africa.

As part of its series of Human Rights Month celebrations the CRL Rights Commission is hosting a seminar themed: Do the Dead have Rights? Promotion and Protection of Burial Rights and Rights of Access to sacred graves in South Africa.

The presentation at the seminar will deal with the following topic: Tampering with Graves in South Africa: Challenges and Prospects. The guest speaker will be Benjamin Saccaggi from University of Pretoria.

The event will be held as follows:

Venue: Protea Hotel, Polokwane
Date: 28 March 2012
