DNA results are expected to point out who of the two suspects arrested after clocking 124 km/h on a 60 zone over the past weekend should be charged when they appear in the Mmabatho Magistrates Court on Friday.
Investigations of the case involving the two continued after their initial court appearance earlier in the week while they remained in police custody.
Nineteen year old Keketso Morobi and 36 year old Matlhogonolo Motlhake were in a Jeep Cherokee that clocked the speed camera at around 5h00 on the Seweding Airport road and sped off when officers from the Provincial Road Traffic officer ordered them to stop. The pair were apprehended after crashing their vehicle on the N18 Vryburg Airport road junction with traffic officers in hot pursuit.
A DNA test analysis was done at the scene of the crash to determine who was driving the vehicle as officers believe there was a swap of drivers after the crash. Motlhake who allegedly could barely stand on his feet denied that he was driving the vehicle when it clocked the speed machine and sped off.
Though drunken driving charges could not be registered as blood samples were extracted after more than two hours, authorities are confident that the blood on the driver’s side of the vehicle has provided the necessary DNA to determine who was the actual driver to answer to the charges of reckless and negligent driving, and failure to stop when ordered to do by a law enforcement officer.
Meanwhile, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono has reiterated her commitment that increased visibility and coordinated law enforcement and crime prevention operations will be stepped up to squeeze lawlessness and crime to zero this festive season.
She has warned motorists who would dare to drive drunk or above the permissible speed limit across all roads in the province during the festive season that they would for a long time remember that the North West Province is a drive sober ,drive slow or jail lock-up zone.
