Western Cape Government Human Settlements Minister Bonginkosi Madikizela has confirmed the distribution of economic opportunities at the Nuwe Begin Housing Project in Cape Town. The distribution will be 40% for Ward 108, 30% for Ward 17 and 30% for Ward 90. This will ensure that all communities who will benefit from housing opportunities will also benefit economically. A copy of the notice of distribution of economic opportunities is attached.
The project has been affected by community conflict around the distribution of employment opportunities, including demonstrations and the burning of cars on 15 November 2011. While the department recognises the right of communities to express their opinions, the destruction of property and the violation of any laws are strongly condemned.
The Nuwe Begin project consists of 1 200 Breaking New Ground (BNG) units (these are units in which beneficiaries who earn less than R3 500 pm and receive a complete subsidy. 900 beneficiaries are from the flood prone areas in ward 90, 150 beneficiaries from ward 17, and 150 from ward 108. There will also be 591 Bonded units ranging in price from R300 000 – R500 000 offered to the open market.
The department wishes for the project to be completed as soon as possible, in order to deliver on its strategic mandate of the accelerated delivery of housing opportunities to those people who really need them.
