Deputy President Motlanthe concludes a two-day working visit to Syria

Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe today, 22 October 2010, concluded a two-day working visit to the Syrian Arab Republic.

The purpose of the visit was to further strengthen existing relations between South Africa and Syria, and create an enabling environment for increased trade and investment between the two states.  In this regard two agreements were signed namely: Agreement on Economic and Trade Cooperation; and Protocol on Cooperation Agreement.

The two agreements will pave the way for businesses from South Africa and Syria to take full advantage of excellent diplomatic relations between the two states to establish strong business ties which will lead to increased economic activity.

South Africa and Syria will explore cooperation in the areas of education, information and communication technology, science and technology, agriculture and forestry, financial services and construction.

A South Africa-Syria Business Forum was established to create a platform for the business people from both countries to work together on projects that can contribute to increased trade and investment between South Africa and Syria.

Both the South African and Syrian government committed themselves to work together to remove all other impediments to trade and investment.

Deputy President Motlanthe also met with representatives of Palestinian political organisations where he received a briefing on the ongoing Palestinian struggle for self determination. The Deputy President offered South Africa's continued support for the Palestinian people in their quest for self determination.
