Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe today, 13 April 2010 arrived in Tunis capital city of the Republic of Tunisia ahead of a two-day working visit, 14 to 15 April 2010. He was received by His Excellency Mohamed Ghannouchi Prime Minister of the Republic of Tunisia.
The Deputy President is accompanied by the Minister of Social Development Edna Molewa, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ebrahim Ebrahim, Deputy Minister of Communications Dina Pule, Deputy Minister of Science and Technology Derek Hanekom and senior government officials.
The working visit by the Deputy President takes place within the context of the South-South cooperation and the consolidation of the African Agenda.
The working visit to Tunisia also takes place in order to continue the high level interactions between the two countries and further explore possible areas of cooperation.
Deputy President Motlanthe will hold bilateral talks with the Prime Minister, Ghannouchi and co-chair a working session to assess progress achieved in various areas of cooperation such as health, defence, social development, science and technology and information and communication technology.
The Deputy President will also visit the Ariana Governorate, a National Solidarity Fund which represents a flagship programme on poverty alleviation, something which resonates with one of the Deputy President’s delegated functions in South Africa.
He will also visit El Gazala Techno Park and the National Archives in line with the scientific and technological cooperation and the arts and culture agreements which have already been negotiated and will be concluded in the near future.
Deputy President Motlanthe is also expected to pay a courtesy visit to the President of the Republic of Tunisia, His Excellency Ben Ali.
The Deputy President is expected to be back on Friday, 16 April 2010.
