Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa, Kgalema Motlanthe has today, 24 May 2011, arrived in Addis Ababa, the Federal Republic of Ethiopia to attend the second Africa-India Forum Summit (AIFS II) scheduled for 24 to 25 May 2011.
Deputy President Motlanthe is accompanied by the Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ebrahim I Ebrahim and senior government officials.
The summit aims to enhance partnership and shared vision between Africa and India. It is a follow-up to the first Africa-India Forum Summit that took place in New Delhi, in April 2008, during which the New Delhi Declaration and Framework for Cooperation were adopted.
The summit will evaluate progress achieved in areas such as human resources and institutional capacity building; science and technology; agricultural productivity and food security; industrial growth; health; infrastructure development and Information and Communication Technology.
Furthermore, the summit will discuss measures to support African economic programmes within the context of Programme for Infrastructure Development in Africa (PIDA), New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD), and Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP).
Africa and India have longstanding fraternal relations and worked together during the struggle for independence and achievement of self-determination.
Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is expected to arrive back in South Africa on 26 May 2011.
