Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe as Chancellor of the University of Venda today, Friday 21, May 2010, congratulated Mr Thomas Chauke, the recipient of the Honorary Doctorate in African Languages at the third session of the University of Venda (Univen) Autumn Graduation Ceremony.
Thomas Chauke is honoured for the outstanding contribution towards the development of Xitsonga language, which is one of the languages offered at Univen and the development of African languages in South Africa.
In this regard the University of Venda, through its Chancellor, Kgalema Motlanthe, wishes to congratulate Mr Chauke for his excellent contribution to the development of African Languages, in particular Xitsonga, that provides South Africans with valuable insights into social customs, attitudes and believes.
The Deputy President in extending his congratulatory message to all other University Graduates said, "This is a happy occasion for both parents and their graduating sons and daughters who have worked hard to arrive at this momentous moment.
Deputy President Motlanthe said to the graduates that the determination proves that nothing in life will be achieved without toil and sweat.
Furthermore he said that graduations represent the start of a brighter future to them, their families and the communities they represent".
The Deputy President had the opportunity to undertake a campus tour as part of the evaluation of the campus 2025 development plan. The University also hosted a Chancellor dinner where the Deputy President received a presentation on the overall strategy and vision of the University of Venda.
Also attending the graduation ceremony was the Premier of Limpopo Cassel Mathale and other senior government officials.
The Deputy President departs Venda for the City of Polokwane ahead of the evaluation of the state of readiness in hosting the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He will also conduct a tour to the legacy projects and later interact with members of the surrounding communities.
