Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe on Sunday, 22 July 2012, arrived in Washington DC to attend the International Aids Conference. Deputy President Motlanthe will address the opening session of the Conference scheduled for 22 July 2012 at 19:00.
Deputy President Motlanthe will highlight the progress that South Africa has made in the past few years in the fight against HIV, AIDS and TB which include a further reduction to 2.7% in the mother to child transmission of HIV; and a record of 20 Million people having taken the HIV test.
Deputy President Motlanthe will also highlight South Africa’s vision of South Africa’s National Strategic Plan 2012 – 2016, which focuses on eliminating HIV as advocated by the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS). The vision for South Africa is zero new HIV and TB infections to vertical transmission; zero preventable deaths associated with HIV and TB and zero discrimination associated with HIV and TB.
The Deputy President will appeal to the international community to continue working with the African countries in partnership to win the fight against HIV, AIDS and TB.
Deputy President Motlanthe will hold meetings with representatives of the United States of America, United Nations and other role players in the fight against HIV and AIDS such as Bill Gates and Elton John.
Deputy President is accompanied by the Minister of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi and Deputy Minister of Women, Children and People with Disabilities, Ms Hendrietta Bogopane-Zulu.
