Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa concludes working visit to Sri Lanka

Deputy President Ramaphosa today, Tuesday 8 July 2014 concluded his visit to Sri Lanka where he met various political leaders including paying a courtesy call on President Mahinda Rajapaksa to deliver a message from President Jacob Zuma.

Deputy President Ramaphosa was supported in the visit by Deputy Minister Nomaindia Mfeketo, High Commissioner Geoff Doidge, Ebrahim Ebrahim, senior government officials and they were also joined by members of South African civil society.

Deputy President Ramaphosa visited the country in his capacity as Special Envoy of President Zuma on Sri Lanka. In this regard, South Africa has been invited by the government of Sri Lanka and the Tamil National Alliance to share South Africa's experiences on lessons learnt from South Africa's truth and reconciliation commission as an integral part of our negotiated political settlement.

In pursuance of this objective, Deputy President Ramaphosa met with various political leaders and delegations, including the Minister of External Affairs, Professor GL Peiris, the Leader of the opposition United National Party, Mr R Wickremasinghe, the leadeship of the Tamil National Alliance, the Chief Minister of the Northern Provincial Council, Mr J Wigneswaran, and visited the Northern Province where he met with Governor of the Northern province, Major General GA Chandasiri.

Deputy President Ramaphosa will return to South Africa later today where he is expected to brief President Jacob Zuma on his engagements in Sri Lanka.
