Deputy Minister Thabang Makwetla on passing away of three correctional officials

Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services, Thabang Makwetla, has described the deaths of three correctional officials in a motor vehicle collision yesterday (31 August 2017) as a huge loss.

According to the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), Mr. Alwin Malcom Louw, Mr. George Tebogo Thomas and Mr. Itumeleng Luca Papier passed away whilst travelling on the N2 near Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape, after leaving a parolee at the Humansdorp Community Corrections, when they were involved in a head-on collision with a truck. It is reported that the three officials, who were stationed at Kimberley Correctional Centre in the Northern Cape, died on the scene.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services, we want to convey our deepest condolences to the families and colleagues of these officials and we will continue to provide their loved ones and work colleagues with the necessary support. These officials, who passed away in the line of duty,  were trailblazers of a new crusade of realizing the correction of citizens who are in conflict with the law and the rehabilitation of those who are social misfits in our communities. They played an integral part in the journey of nation-building, healing the wounds of victims of crime as well as affording those in conflict with the law a second chance. May the peace, strength and comfort of the Almighty continue to embrace us all during this time of grief,” said the Deputy Minister.
