Deputy Minister Mahambehlala and MEC Vass undertake a site visit to the Hull Street Social Housing Project, in De Beers, Kimberley, Northern Cape
On Friday, 06 June 2025, the Deputy Minister of Human Settlements, Tandi Mahambehlala, with the MEC of COGHSTA, in the Northern Cape, Bentley Vass, visited the Hull Street Social Housing Project, in De Beers, Kimberley (Frances Baard District), to be apprised on the progress of this project.
The Hull Street Project, which resumed operations in January 2025, after the appointment of a new construction company, will yield an additional 372 housing units that are currently under construction. To date, the project has housed a total of 127 beneficiaries, comprising 114 rental units in the Hull Street Project and an additional 13 rental units completed at the Moshoeshoe Eco-Village.
Deputy Minister Mahambehlala, expressed that she is happy with the ‘’substantial progress that she has seen on site. We understand that there are some challenges that they highlighted to us, and we have committed to working with all relevant stakeholders to ensure the completion of this project that will benefit an additional 372 beneficiaries’’.
The Hull Street Social Housing Project has directly created employment for over 200 local labourers and engaged 15 subcontractors. This commitment to job creation extends to empowering women within the industry and providing invaluable practical experience to students fresh from their academic studies, nurturing the next generation of construction professionals.
MEC Vass, said ‘’Our commitment to the people of this province is to ensure decent quality houses that will provide security and comfort, and we continue to do everything in our power to realise this commitment through various projects we are implementing, including this Hull Street Project, which was stalled last year. We have since appointed a new contractor who resumed work in January this year, and we are of the firm view that by the end of this financial year, we will be handing over the keys of these houses to the beneficiaries of this project’’. Deputy Minister and MEC Vass, proceeded to visit the site of the Roodepan Land Parcel acquired by the Northern Cape Provincial Government for a housing development and to meet with the contractor appointed for the township establishment.
Thus far, bulk services availability for the portion of land is confirmed, the geotechnical investigation has been completed, and the traffic impact assessment has been completed among the key milestones of the project.
MEC Vass said ‘’We are going to set up the site here for the work to commence as soon as possible, as we were waiting for all legislative requirements to be completed’’.
The Northern Cape Provincial Government is committed to addressing the huge housing backlog of the province through the implementation of various housing projects in the five districts of the Province.
