Deputy Minister Sihle Zikalala addresses 15th Annual South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession (SACQSP) International Research Conference in Cape Town

Deputy Minister Zikalala calls for sustainable and accountable infrastructure delivery

Public Works and Infrastructure Deputy Minister Sihle Zikalala has called for sustainable and accountable infrastructure delivery.
Speaking at the 15th Annual South African Council for the Quantity Surveying Profession (SACQSP) International Research Conference in Cape Town, Zikalala echoed the sentiments that were expressed by the participants at the conference for stricter control of the built environment sector.

The call follows several incidents that have tarnished the image of the sector, including fatal accidents at construction sites across the country.

“Our profession can no longer be confined to the traditional delivery of infrastructure. We must design, plan, and cost projects with foresight ensuring that what we build today can withstand the environmental challenges of tomorrow.”

Deputy Minister Zikalala emphasised that sustainability must be at the heart of infrastructure planning, while accountability and collaboration across government, academia, and industry remain key to achieving inclusive growth.

Zikalala reaffirmed government’s commitment to infrastructure-led economic recovery, with more than R1 trillion to be invested in infrastructure over the next three years, and urged professionals to embrace innovation, transformation, and integrity in driving national development.

“If we get it right, we build not only roads and bridges, but also trust, dignity, and opportunity,” he concluded.
