Deputy Minister for Public Service and Administration, Ms Ayanda Dlodlo hosts an empowerment workshop with Community Development Workers (CDWs) in the Western Cape

The Deputy Minister for Public Service and Administration, Ms Ayanda Dlodlo, today hosted an empowerment workshop with the Community Development Workers (CDWs) in the Western Cape.

In her budget vote speech to Parliament in 2011, the Deputy Minister made various observations regarding the Community Development Programme and the role of Community Development Workers in particular.

Addressing the CDWs, Deputy Minister Dlodlo highlighted the need to implement the Batho Pele principles as a guide in the work of Community Development Workers. She also emphasised the need to shift focus to the positive when reporting on government programmes to build the moral fibre of workers. In addition the Deputy Minister stressed the need for information sharing in order to plan better, “We need to synergise to derive more value in what we put in”.

Supported by the MEC of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in the province Mr Anton Bredell, the workshop aimed to acknowledge the sterling work done by the CDWs in the Western Cape. It was also a platform to facilitate dialogue on expanding the programme, to establish the future of the programme and on finalisation of the framework of the programme in the province.

Presentations by provincial departments of Health, Social Development, Human Settlement, Safety and Security and GCIS were made on the provincial perspective on community development workers in government. The common goal is to align all government community practitioners in delivering services to communities.
