The Deputy Minister of Higher Education and Training, Dr Mimmy Gondwe, has concluded a successful working visit to London in the United Kingdom. The trip included a three-day high-level participation at the Going Global Conference 2025 and key engagements with potential international partners to promote youth skills development through the TVET and Community Colleges sectors.
Deputy Minister Gondwe was invited by the British Council to attend the Going Global Conference 2025. The event is a gathering of international educational leaders, providing a global platform for panel discussions, sharing best practices, networking, and shaping policies to influence the future of higher education, especially in the TVET sector. The Deputy Minister’s participation highlights South Africa's growing role in global education policy and DHET's efforts to position TVET colleges as the preferred option for students.
“During the Going Global Conference 2025, I participated in two high-level panel discussions. One on, ‘Opportunity-driven TVET: the future of skills development,’ and a second panel with the theme: ‘Building resilience for a volatile future,’ which explores the ability of the higher education sector to absorb shocks and demonstrate resilience amid geopolitical instability; for example, some of our leading universities in South Africa lost key U.S. funding due to the current geopolitical climate,” said Deputy Minister Gondwe.
On the sidelines of the Going Global Conference 2025, Deputy Minister Gondwe held several meetings with potential international partners. A notable meeting was with Mr. Andre Harriman, Head of Delivery for Sub-Saharan Africa at King’s Trust International.
King’s Trust International was established by His Majesty King Charles III in 2015 to address the global youth unemployment crisis. The organisation collaborates with various national partners worldwide to provide youth development and education programmes.
The meeting between King’s Trust International and Deputy Minister Gondwe discussed potential collaboration in education and skills development programmes for youth in South Africa. Both parties committed to further engagements to develop an impactful, tangible programme of action.
