Deputy Minister Mabudafhasi congratulates the winners of the 2012 Youth Water Awards

The Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Ms Rejoice Mabudafhasi, would like to congratulate the winners of the 2012 Youth Water Awards. The award ceremony took place on 6 July 2012, at Birchwood hotel, Boksburg, Gauteng.

The Republic of South Africa through the Department of Water in South Africa hosts Youth Summit on Water and Climate Change annually. The Youth summit creates a platform for young people participating in the projects of the school based water and environment education programme called 2020 Vision.

The winners are awarded for their innovative initiatives in the following categories:

Baswa le Meetse (Youth in Water)

This competition-based project targets Grade 6 learners and conveys health and hygiene messages through medium of art, i.e. drama, traditional music, poetry, praise singing and posters.

Prizes in all sub categories:

Position 1: Cabane Junior Secondary School, Eastern Cape, Mangwato Primary School, Limpopo, Solomondale Primary School, Limpopo, Kwa-Msikwa Junior Secondary School, Eastern Cape, Sindekile Primary School: R6 000 , Media centre, Trophy & Certificate.

Position 2: Mhwayi Primary School, Mpumalanga, Izwilesizwe Primary School, KwaZulu Natal, Zibungu Junior Secondary School, Eastern Cape, Khulugqame Primary School, KwaZulu Natal, Dr Nhlapo  Primary School, Gauteng: R5 000 , Trophy & Certificate.

Position 3: Khureng Primary School, Limpopo, Rolihlahla Primary School, Northern Cape, Siyabulela Primary School, Western Cape, Tlhophane Primary School, North West, Tshabelang Primary School, North West: R4 000, Trophy & Certificate.

South African Youth Water Prize (SAYWP)

Learners between Grade 9 and 11 are engaged in identifying problems and develop inventions and awareness projects to solve them. The project serves as an incubator for the Water Affairs Learning Academy.

Prizes:

Position 1: Mvumikazi Mcelwane, KwaZulu-Natal R8 000 cash prize, Return ticket to and from Stockholm Sweden, R2 000.00 to spend in Sweden, Bursary for a career in the water sector & Laptop.

Position 2: Tshepo Mmolaeng, Kutlwano Tshelwane, Boichoko Mogatle, Northern Cape R6 000 Cash prize, Laptop, Bursary for a career in the water sector.

Position 3: Masego Mabena, Kgabo Kubyana, Tsakane Manganyi, Gauteng R4 500 Cash prize, Laptop, Bursary for a career in the water sector.

Public Speaking

Targets learners between Grades 10 and 11 and focuses on raising awareness about the impact of Climate Change on water resources.

Prizes:

Position 1: Sinenhlanhla Bhengu, KwaZulu Natal, Bursary for a career in the water sector, Trophy & Certificate.

Position 2: Lwamkele Sodladla, Western Cape, Bursary for a career in the water sector, Trophy & Certificate.

Position 3: Elija Djang, North West, Bursary for a career in the water sector, Trophy & Certificate.

Aqua-Enduro

The core business of the programme is issues of drinking water quality. The aim is to develop an interest in learners who are between Grade 8 and 11 to pursue careers in the water sector.

Prizes: 20 learners from nine provinces received bursaries, certificates and trophies.
