Today, Tuesday 5 April 2011, Deputy Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs, Mme Rejoice Mabudafhasi, concluded her North West Public Participation Programme visit in Mafikeng.
During her two days visit to the province the Deputy Minister launched a water project in Ratlou Local Municipality and inspected progress on the domestic waste collection pilot project in Mafikeng Local Municipality as follows:
On Monday, 4 April 2011, the Deputy Minister launched a water project in Ratlou Local Municipality. Ratlou has been experiencing water shortages and is amongst the driest areas in the province. Three boreholes were sited, drilled and equipped for human consumption. These boreholes will be an upgrade of the existing system of water supply of Setlagole including Thutlwane and Setlhwatlhwe villages, supplying a population of 22 835 people.
The Deputy Minister proceeded to Ramotshere Local Municipality to engage the stakeholders about water provision challenges. Mabudafhasi’s visit to the province was a follow up on the stakeholder meeting she had together with the North West Premier, Ms Thandi Modise, to address water challenges in the NgakaModiriMolema District, with special reference to Ratlou and RamotshereMoiloa Local Municipalities.
On Tuesday, 5 April 2011, the Deputy Minister visited a Domestic Waste collection pilot project to inspect progress as well as to engage the provincial and local stakeholders. This project was launched in August 2009. The main objective for this project is to provide domestic waste collection services to 30 000 households using a community based collection model that uses small medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs) and labour intensive method from local communities. The project created 70 jobs for the locals.
MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Mr P Sebego, MEC for Economic Development, Environment, Conservation and Tourism, Ms Tebogo Modise, Executive Mayor of NgakaModiriMolema, Councillor Pinky Mokoto joined the Deputy Minister during the project visit and stakeholder engagement.
