Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr Andries Nel, MP, meeting with United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on Human Rights of Migrants, Mr Jorge Bustamante, Pretoria

The Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development, Mr Andries Nel, met with the United Nations (UN) Special Rapporteur on human rights of migrants, Mr Jorge Bustamante, today in Pretoria as part of the Special Rapporteur’s mandate to monitor and report on the human rights situation of migrants.

Deputy Minister Nel welcomed the opportunity to brief the Special Rapporteur on, inter alia, the legal framework within which the human rights of migrants are protected, as well as on envisaged draft bills to give effect to South Africa’s International Obligations. Governments commitments to eradicate xenophobia and any related intolerance, was also emphasised

Both Deputy Minister Andries Nel and Mr Bustamante experienced the discussions as fruitful, with further interactions to follow, should it be necessary.
