Deputy Minister Hlengiwe Mkhize leads Women's Justice and Empowerment Initiative (WJEI) in Nairobi, Kenya

Deputy Minister Prof. Hlengiwe Mkhize, will lead the South African delegation at the coordinating meeting that will take place in Nairobi, Kenya from 10 to 12 January 2011, followed by an exchange visit with the WJEI-Kenya counterparts from 13 to 14 January 2011.

The Research Triangle Institute (RTI) International is a contractor for the US Agency for International Development (USAID), implementing the Women’s Justice and Empowerment Initiative (WJEI) in South Africa, under a bilateral agreement between USAID and the South African government.

The aim of the programme is to enhance South-South dialogue towards guiding WJEI-participating countries, such as Kenya, Nairobi, South Africa and Zambia in understanding of the Thuthuzela Care Centre (TCC) model and promoting it as a best practice for sexual violence management.

The RTI enhance discussions among the four countries by coordinating meetings that bring government counterparts, USAID and implementers from these countries to share the program’s outputs, synergies and way forward.

This also serves as an opportunity for South Africa to engage with key stakeholders and ministries, to contribute on the multi-sectoral nature of South Africa’s Inter-Departmental Management Team (IDMT), and its strategy to manage sexual and gender-based violence(SGBV) across pillars of prevention, response and support.
