Deputy Minister Cronin Conveys condolences to families of two matric pupils killed in road crash

Deputy Transport Minister Jeremy Cronin has conveyed condolences to the family and friends of two Grade 12 learners killed in a car crash in Pinelands, Cape Town earlier today Monday, 16 November 2009.

"We want to convey our condolences to the family and friends of the two grade 12 learners killed in a car crash in Pinelands today. We wish those injured a speedy recovery," said the Deputy Minister.

According to initial reports, the learners had just completed their Physical Science Paper 2 (Chemistry), and were on their way home, when the crash occurred on Jan Smuts Drive at 13h00. The exact cause of the crash is not known and Police are investigating.

Meanwhile, Deputy Minister Cronin has urged parents, learners and those who transport learners to ensure that they travel safely. "Now is the time when many students and learners will celebrate the completion and results of their final exams. We therefore want to urge parents, learners as well as those public transport operators who provide transport to our learners to ensure they drive safely and do not drink and drive.

"Throughout the years, there are always serious road crashes and fatalities during this period involving matriculants and students, especially during after parties. It is important that parents, scholars and public transport operators are aware of the threats to the safety of our young road users. Unlicensed driving is also a significant threat to road safety and drinking and driving increases the risk of not arriving alive. Focus on responsible driving, alcohol free driving and impress your friends by caring for their safety," said the Deputy Minister.
