Deputy Minister Buti Manamela chairs Symposium on Youth Skills and Development

The Embassy of South Africa in Germany together with McKinsey held a two day symposium on Youth Skills Development and Employment Creation. The symposium took place on 9 to 10 November 2015 on the sidelines of President Jacob Zuma's meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

South Africa's National Development Plan prioritises the development of youth, poverty alleviation, small business development and job creation. The aim of the symposium was to highlight the importance of skills development and explore opportunities that exist between the two countries.

Participating at the symposium were Ministers of Higher Education and Training, Blade Nzimande, Labour, Mildred Oliphant and Small Business Development, Lindiwe Zulu.

Deputy Minister therefore chaired the second day of the symposium where ideas were shared with Germany on how to enhance economic participation including entrepreneurship and employment. At the core of Germany's success is training of young people on practical skills.

For South Africa the main lesson was that elements of success to exist. There is therefore a need to communicate and coordinate effort more effectively across departments, spheres of government and social partners. The trust between the social partners means agreements are implemented for the greater good.

"It was a successful meeting as we were able to share our experiences with our German counterparts on successes in developing practical skills in young people. Through such partnerships we are ankle to create opportunities that will enable young people to take up their own development,” said Deputy Minister Manamela.

Deputy Minister will then head to New York where he will meet with the United Nations special envoy on youth, Mr Ahmad Alhendawi to discuss youth development. Deputy Minister Manamela will then proceed to Washington where he will conduct a study tour on the US National Youth Service Programme.
