The purpose of the event is to give the area's communities an opportunity to bring their problems regarding, among others, sport and recreation to the attention of Parliamentarians of the National Council of Provinces.
Many government departments are represented in the event.
Most questions raised by the public centred around the lack of sports facilities, and the poor quality of existing ones.
In his response the Deputy Minister mentioned that R1,5 billion Rand has been set aside in the MIG fund for the construction of facilities. This money is available to municipalities to access and use to improve and build sports grounds and facilities.
The Deputy Minister was accompanied by a team from Sport and Recreation South Africa (SRSA) who visited a mass participation hub and two facilities in the area around Dundee and Nqutu and provided advice on how sport services and infrastructure can be improved.
Detailed answers about more specific sport related issues were provided by the Kwazulu Natal MEC for Sport and Recreation, Ms Wesiwe Thusi.
Deadlines were set for certain issues involving incomplete facilities and hubs experiencing problems were set.
Taking Parliament to the People is an initiative of the South African Parliament, and takes place once a year. For more information see www.parliament.gov.za.
