Deputy Minister Andrew Whitfield launches Zone 1 of the Atlantis Special Economic Zone

Atlantis SEZ Marks Major Milestone with Official Launch of Zone 1 and SOD Turning for V3 Facility

The official launch of Zone 1 of the Atlantis Special Economic Zone (ASEZ) and the sod-turning ceremony for the Quantum V3 Facility marked a major leap forward for South Africa’s green industrialisation agenda. Officiated by Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition, Mr Andrew Whitfield, the event signalled renewed momentum in driving sustainable industrial development, job creation, and inclusive economic growth.

Delivering the keynote address, Deputy Minister Whitfield described the day’s milestones as powerful catalysts for economic growth, green industrialisation, and long-term prosperity.

“The ASEZ is not just about infrastructure — it’s about unlocking the potential of high-value industries, empowering communities, and building the resilient, low-carbon economy South Africa needs,” said Whitfield.

The ASEZ, designated in 2018 and now fully operational, has already attracted R815 million in capital investment and created over 420 permanent jobs. The launch of Zone 1 further accelerated this progress, having delivered essential infrastructure such as water, sewer, roads, and smart grid technology — future-proofing Atlantis as a competitive green manufacturing hub.

In addition, Whitfield said that over R25 million in Zone 1 contracts were allocated to local small, medium and micro enterprises (SMMEs), exceeding the 30% target and creating 389 construction jobs — 171 of which came from the greater Atlantis area.

“We are not just building roads and installing lights; we are building a stronger community, empowering SMMEs, and creating jobs for the people of Atlantis,” Whitfield stated.

The sod-turning ceremony also marked the official start of the R18 million Quantum V3 Facility — a cutting-edge investment in acetylene gas manufacturing. The facility will feature solar energy systems, sustainable hempcrete construction, and advanced digital technologies, aligning with the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition’s (the dtic) industrial policy priorities of decarbonisation, digitalisation, and diversification.

“The Quantum V3 Facility is a bold vote of confidence in Atlantis and in South Africa’s green economy. It embodies the kind of innovation and commitment that will define our industrial future,” he added.

During his visit, Whitfield also toured GRI Towers South Africa — a major wind tower and flange manufacturer based within the ASEZ. The visit reaffirmed the dtic’s support for renewable energy sector manufacturing and its associated value chains. As the dtic continues to champion inclusive industrialisation, the ASEZ stands as a testament to what is possible through collaborative partnerships and purpose-driven investment.
