Deployment of South African National Defence Force to the Democratic Republic of Congo in fulfilment of a UN obligation

The President of the Republic of South Africa (RSA) and Commander-in-Chief of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has authorised the deployment of the SANDF members to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), in the execution of the international obligations of RSA towards the United Nations (UN). SANDF members have deployed in the United Nations Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) as part of the Force Intervention Brigade (FIB), subsequent the UN Security Council Resolution 2098 dated 28 March 2013.

The deployment forms an integral part of a regional and international strategy agreement, where the RSA by virtue of its membership to SADC agreed with the Conference of the Great Lakes Region and the AU, for a force to be deployed in support of DRC government and MONUSCO, to halt the on-going lawlessness and widespread violence in the region.

The deployment of SANDF is a contribution to UN Peacekeeping, Peace Enforcement or Intervention operations, in accordance with the White Paper on RSA’s Participation in Peace Missions.
