The Gauteng Department of Labour has welcomed the sentence given to the female bogus inspector for selling Basic Conditions of Employment Act and Employment Equity Act Chart to Carletonville employers. She also claimed to be in possession of New Labour Laws.
“The department welcomes the swift justice meted on Riaane Meyer, who was impersonating labour inspectors for two counts of fraud and assault with intentions to inflict grievous bodily harm,” said Gauteng Labour Department spokesman Mishack Magakwe.
Carletonville Magistrate Court found Riaane guilty after she pleaded guilty to defrauding Carletonville employers. Her twelve month sentence was suspended for five years and she was ordered to pay back the employers she sold charts to.
We want to emphasise that the proposed amendments are still in the consultation phase and have not been finalised. There are therefore no new labour laws at this time. This follows complaints of various business owners in Gauteng.
We want to place it on record that all our services are rendered free of charge; we do not sell any publications, charts, pamphlets and posters especially related to new Labour Legislation. The department does not have any agreements or partnerships with any recruitment agencies or have authorised any organisation to render our services at a fee. Clients and employers need to be extra vigilant and should report any suspicious visits and requests to our nearby offices.
In view of the growing popularity of people impersonating labour inspectors the department sends out a media statement warning employers to double check the authenticity of people claiming to be labour inspectors with our nearest labour offices.
