Department of Science and Technology takes SumbandilaSat to learners

In celebration of World Space Week, from 4 to 10 October, the Department of Science and Technology (DST) is on an awareness drive at Mogale High School in Bapong, North West, teaching learners about space science and technology.

The awareness drive includes a talk on space science and technology, and getting the learners to assemble a model of SumbandilaSat. The school will also receive a poster showing details of the satellite's different parts.

World Space Week is celebrated every year. This year's theme is "Mysteries of the Cosmos", selected by the World Space Week Association Board of Directors to increase the impact of the week.

Throughout history, humans have wondered about the universe and their place in it. Today, we are learning a lot about the cosmos, but with each answer come more questions.

The questions deal not only with the nature of the galaxies and stars, but also the nature of life itself. World Space Week is a time to probe what we know, what it means, and what we have yet to learn about the mysteries of the cosmos.

The week educates people about the benefits they receive from space science and technology, and promotes the greater use of space for sustainable economic development.

It also encourages public support for space programmes, gets children excited about space, raises awareness of institutions around the world that are involved in space, and fosters international cooperation in space outreach and education.
