I have learnt with sadness of the passing away of Mr William Blankley. The Department of Science and Technology was privileged to have worked with Mr Blankley in the production of the national research and development and innovation surveys for more than a decade.
He contributed immensely to the establishment and operation of the Centre for Science Technology and Innovation Indicators (CeSTII) in the Human Sciences Research Council. He was well-published on the subject of science and technology indicators, as well as innovation measurement.
He competently represented South Africa in the African Science and Technology Indicators Initiative (ASTII), the OECD's National Experts for Science and Technology Indicators (NESTI) and other international engagements.
Our sincere condolences go to his family, friends, colleagues and associates. May his soul rest in peace!
