Department to repair potholes on Wepener – Zastron Road

The Department of Police, Roads and Transport in the Free State has appointed contractor to repair potholes on the R26 Road between Wepener and Zastron. The contractor, Pro- Phalt has been on site since the 18th of June 2012 and is expected to repair 1 000 potholes per month over two months at a cost of R1, 276,800.

The contractor is using a specialised machine that heats a road up with infrared beams. The surface becomes workable to the extent that they can add hot mix asphalt to the existing surface to backfill it to its original level. The work on the road is progressing well although cold weather and rain is delaying the repair of potholes on the road. Up to now the contractor has manage to repair 1 500 potholes and there is a hope that all potholes will be repaired by the 18 of August 2012 as planned.
