The North West Department of Local Government and Traditional Affairs will embark on a campaign to mobilise the community of Moretele Local Municipality to register indigents to enable them to access free basic municipal services. The campaign will cover all 28 wards and will start on 23 April until 25 May 2012 and will take at different venues in Moretele.
Free basic municipal services are services provided at no charge by government to poor households. These services which are provided by municipalities and include a minimum amount of electricity, water and sanitation that is sufficient to cater for the basic needs of a poor household.
The set requirements to qualify for inclusion in the indigent register are:
- South African citizen
- Must reside in a dwelling
- Applicants must prove that their cannot afford to pay for the services
- Unemployed adults who do not have adequate source on income
- The combined monthly household income of the applicant should not be more than R2020
- Child headed households
- Households without infrastructure
To date, the North West province has registered enormous progress with regard to free basic services. The recent statistics show that at least 108 124 household have access to free basic electricity and 325 645 households have access to free basic water while 141 402 households have access to free basic refuse removal.
