Department in progress of filling vacant posts

The Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development has appointed 109 social workers in the first four months of the year as it seeks to improve service delivery as required by legislation.

These appointments have improved the availability of social workers to 80% or 767 in the province. Social work bursary holders, who completed their studies last year, have also been absorbed into the department as part of the department’s social worker development recruitment plan.

In addition the department has filled 104 nursing posts at institutions that deal with the care and welfare of vulnerable people including children, the elderly and people living with disabilities. The only challenge is in relation to nursing occupational dispensation.

Furthermore, 25 Senior Management services posts which is equivalent to 72% posts filled.

The availability of qualified professionals is important in fulfilling legislative obligations that the department has towards vulnerable groups.

Despite scarcity of social workers and nursing professionals, the department will continue it recruitment and retention drive to ensure that the quality of care is not compromised.
